“Burglars target Kmart stores” |

The store was the second Kmart burglarized in the area within a span of three days, using the same method of operation, and police believe the same burglars could be at work. In the Conneaut case, thieves broke a window in the store around 3 a.m. Monday and went directly to the jewelry case a few steps from the front door. The burglars broke into the case and took a quantity of merchandise, said Detective Michael Colby. He declined to say how much jewelry was stolen or estimate its value. The break-in triggered alarms, but the burglars had grabbed their loot and fled the scene before officers arrived, Colby said. Surveillance cameras did capture some images of the crooks, Colby said. There are no suspects, he said. The tactics used in the Conneaut burglar mirrors the methods used in a theft reported Friday morning at a Kmart store in Erie, Pa., according to reports. In that case, thieves also broke a window to gain entry and the intruders left ahead of law enforcement. There is the possibility the crimes could be connected, Colby said.
