The Space, an apparel and jewelry store, opened in June on North Market Street in Frederick.

Business owner Diane Ferren described the store as an offshoot of The Sky's The Limit, a similar store she owns in downtown Frederick.

"We have so many personalities who come into The Sky's The Limit we wanted to expand and satisfy more customers," store manager Jillian Murphy said.

The Space sells clothing, accessories, gifts and home decor, and recently began to carry gently used items.

"Carrying previously loved items is a new thing for us," Ferren said. "We think there is a demand. It's not a consignment store. We purchase gently used things outright that must be boutique-style and in excellent condition."

But not everything in the store is used, Murphy said. "Seventy or 80 percent of what we carry are new items but we're open to expanding the gently used area," she said.

Ferren said The Sky's The Limit -- in business for 18 years in downtown Frederick -- has a strong local following. She hopes the customers who like her first store will also like The Space.

Ferren said her business philosophy, "Treating people fairly and what you give out comes back to you," may have something to do with her success.

"I also believe in perseverance: 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent inspiration," she said.

Ferren likes being in business in downtown Frederick.

"Downtown has just become more vibrant. I love the energy the Downtown Frederick Partnership and others are putting into it," Ferren said. "We have a good group of merchants here and it would be nice if people realized the variety of stores and shopping options they have in downtown Frederick instead of going to the mall."

Assistant store manager Sarah Tressler said the store offers a family atmosphere.

"We find ourselves in conversation with people for a half-hour at a time and you don't find that at the mall," Tressler said.

Sky Ferren is the in-house webmaster for the store's newly launched website. He photographs jewelry and apparel and uploads the pictures online.

"The site was launched a few days ago and we are open to any questions, suggestions or purchases," Ferren said. "We have so much inventory, there is always something new to see online."

The website is focused on jewelry because it is the shop's best-seller, Ferren said.
