Greenwich, Conn. (WTNH) - Brazen robbers stormed a Greenwich jewelry store in broad daylight, swinging sledgehammers to get to the goods.

The robbery happened Tuesday morning at Betteridge Jewelers on Greenwich Avenue.

Owner Terry Betteridge tells News 8 it was a frightening scene.

'We had a couple of fellas stop right in front of the middle of Greenwich Avenue behind parked cars, blocking the avenue and step out with sledgehammers. They walked across the steps to the store, threatened everybody, smashed some of the cases and scoop out wristwatches and run," he said.

The masked men got away with about $45,000 worth of watches.

Betteridge thinks perhaps this crime would not have happened if more cops were walking the beat in the area, which is home to several high-end jewelry stores.

"I like beat cops, I don't see 'em. I love the cops on the corner. Used to be the guys liked to be on the Avenue and it was real contact with the community, they knew what looked right on the Avenue, who was right and who was wrong. Kept an eye on everyone, everyone felt safer," he said.

No arrests have been made in the case. Police believe a third suspect waited in the getaway car.
