New, improved Monet jewelry feels all grown up

I've rediscovered costume jewelry from Monet.

As a just-out-of-college girl, I bought many pairs of Monet earrings and a few necklaces, too.

It was affordable and it looked nice enough.

Eventually, I moved on, but Monet didn't. That was part of the problem -- it bored me. And I stopped buying it.

Fast-forward to now.

Monet has gotten a whole lot more interesting. Many of its pieces have a retro feel.

Others are full of glam, full of sparkle.

I've become especially enamored with Monet's pins.

Solidly made, some are downright fun; others are quite sophisticated.

This is my newest acquisition: a resin flower with faceted petals and an eye-catching silver middle.

It's $26, but you're likely to find it on sale.

It and other Monet jewelry are available at Macy's stores ( macys.com); Parisian stores ( bonton.com) and at monet.com.

The Detroit Shoppe

The Detroit Shoppe, a store in Somerset Collection North in Troy that sells all things Detroit and donates proceeds to charity, will close at the end of the day for renovations.

It will reopen sometime in mid-March.

Originally, the store was scheduled to close for good after the holiday shopping season. But response from shoppers has been so strong that the mall decided to keep it open -- once the makeover is completed -- and keep it open through 2011.

The mall has something else planned after that, said a Somerset spokesman. He declined to be specific.

Somerset Collection is at Big Beaver and Coolidge in Troy. Info: thesomersetcollection.com or detroitmovesme.com.

I cashmere

Spotted at Macy's the other day: half-off cashmere scarves and gloves by the store's Charter Club brand.

Why am I telling you this?

Aside from the fact that these are a good deal -- $39 for a cozy scarf, $21 for gloves -- many of them are red, which means they'll make great gifts for Valentine's Day.

In fact, there's lots of red left over from the holidays at stores everywhere.

Take advantage of the prices and give a nice red scarf or gloves set to your mom, your sister, your best girlfriend.

Heck, give them to yourself!

Splendid little things

Your friend's having a baby, and you've had no time to shop for a shower gift.

Turn to the place that's helped you out so many times before: Target.

The retailer has just introduced Splendid Littles, a line of clothing for infants and toddlers that is cute without being cutesy.

Many shirts are $9.99; dresses run about $14.99.

The pink and black sleep set -- onesie, blanket and hat -- pictured above is $24.99.
